After a ton of anticipation, Kendrick Lamar‘s Damn album has arrived for the people. Kendrick alluded to this project for the first time on “The Heart Part 4,” a surprise release with a revealing line: “y’all got until April 7th to get y’all’s shit together.” Speculation started to fly. Would he release a new album on that date? Then, on March 30th, Kendrick had the world talking again with the release of a video for “Humble,” full of braggadocios bars, allegorical symbolism and impeccable camera angles. We even saw LeBron James dancing to songs from the album on his Instagram Stories feed earlier today, a unique but effective marketing tool, considering LeBron’s 29 million+ Instagram follower count.
In regards to the project, Kendrick told The New York Times: “been thinking about my little brothers. One little brother, he bigger than me, he’s 22. Another brother, he just turned 11. Family. I think now, how wayward things have gone within the past few months, my focus is ultimately going back to my community and the other communities around the world where they’re doing the groundwork. To Pimp a Butterfly was addressing the problem. I’m in a space now where I’m not addressing the problem anymore.”
Today, at long last, the project has finally arrived for the people. Damn includes guest features from Rihanna, Danny Brown, Thundercat, Mac Miller, and U2. Production comes from the likes of Mike Will Made It, Sounwave, 9th Wonder, Cardo, and BADBADNOTGOOD, among others. “The Heart Part 4” is not featured on the album, but “Humble” is.
