Many were not happy to hear that Chrisette Michele would be performing at Donald Trump’s Presidential Inauguration on January 20. In response to the uproar, she has released “No Political Genius,” a heartfelt spoken word decree that addresses the backlash the singer-songwriter has been receiving from the hip-hop community.

“I am the black song Spike Lee won’t sing, I am the black voice inauguration bells ring.”

Michele also took to her blog before the night took place with an open letter titled “We Can’t Be Present If We’re Silent” where she quotes Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on her thoughts leading into the inauguration. Post controversial performance, Director Spike Lee decided against using her song “Black Girl Magic” on his Netflix Series “She’s Gotta Have It.” What are your thoughts on the aftermath?

This is the first track from her project Still American. Listen to “No Political Genius” below.
