Kaytranada wins Canada’s biggest music award

The winner is… Kaytranada!

The Polaris Prize is regarded as Canada’s highest honor in music, and this year, Kaytranada‘s 99.9% took home the honor. The Montreal producer beat out fellow shortlist members Carly Rae Jepsen, Grimes, White Lung and many others for the 2016 award.

Every year, 10 albums spanning every genre fathomable are selected to the Polaris shortlist — itself a massive honor. The Polaris Prize is highly regarded for having no direct to the commercial record industry, and largely avoiding Grammy-like politics in creating the list and awarding the prize.

“This is an amazing, unbelievable moment right now”

This is the first time a hip-hop artist has taken home the award. Last year’s prize saw legendary Canadian songwriter Buffy Sainte-Marie beat out artists like BADBADNOTGOOD (with Ghostface Killah), Drake, and Alvvways.
