A Maryland transplant with Nigerian soul, @Lexi_Sugar, provided “Reach The Stars” for #TheTwitterMixtape. If you listen to most albums, you save the most uplifting, inspiring song for last, and inspiration is exactly what Lexi brings to the project. Relaxed vocals and calming production encourage the listener to never give up on what means most to them, so maybe we should all take heed. Check out @Lexi_Sugar’s interview below.
How did you hear about #TheTwitterMixtape?
I got the link from a friend who’s always supported my music.
What is the story behind the song you submitted?
Hameed (@woaahhh) and I were in the studio one day to take down his vocals for a song he was working on. I got him to check his mic and headphone levels in the booth as usual, and he started humming melodies and putting words to them, and I recorded him. I put music to some of the melody that I got from him later after that session, and got the hook! Played it for him and he wrote the verses. We got @tnayah on the last verse.
Musically, what is your creative process like?
My creative process varies, depending on how I’m inspired. I’m a music producer and I love to listen to music, so it comes from listening most times. Then I write, then make a beat to it or vice versa.
Are there any artists you admire and respect that you draw influence from?
Surely. Timbaland, Justin Timberlake, Fela Kuti, and the great Bob Marley. I have tons of other artists I love and I always listen to, however, these are the few that inspire me and my style of music.
Aside from music, are there other ways you express creativity?
I’d rather say that music influences every aspect of my creativity, in the sense that music is everything to me! Music produces an artsy mind which enhances my creativity in all aspect. So for me, MUSIC = CREATIVITY.
What can we expect from you in the future?
My music is known to have a certain sound, think Timbaland + Fela + Bob Marley = LEXISUGAR. However, my creativity is very dynamic. It keeps moving and changes with time, so I cannot give a definite response to this question. *laughs*
Where can new fans learn more about you and your art?
