AM Blacklist: Celebrating Iconic Black Music from 1995 – 2000

The latter half of the 1990s, from 1995 to 2000, was the beginning of a wide takeover period in pop culture for black musicians, artists, and singers. Black artists experienced great crossover appeal from the urban market to topping Billboard’s hot 100.

During this time, black artists were found to be lucrative in various arenas. We found singers and rappers in movies, setting trends in fashion and art and being major players in advertising. Whitney Houston, Will Smith and Ice Cube were breaking box office records and Aaliyah and Lil’ Kim were upping the sales of popular clothing brands.

We also had the popularization of the “Neo-Soul” genre with the successes of artists like D’Angelo, Erykah Badu and Maxwell.

Sonically, it was a time of diversity. There was gangsta rap, conscious rap, bling bling rap and various other subgenres. Girl and boy groups were big and every other week, we had a new one. R&B was diverse and was merging with hip-hop sounds, largely thanks to the introduction of Mary J. Blige, and created “hip-hop soul”.

This sound would go on to inspire artists for generations. Black music on soundtracks were a big thing whether it be on movies or on T.V. shows. Black artists had more exposure on television due to the advent of shows targeting youth audiences such as All That which had musical guests at the end (most of which tended to be hip-hop or R&B) and TRL. We were thriving and no one could stop the train.

What a time to be alive.

Enjoy the Blacklist.
