Ezko releases a powerful new track called “Wake Up” from the vaults for our listening pleasure. The Maryland emcee loops in Detroit vet Scolla and Southern California’s Thurz to add guest verses over top of i.V.‘s beautiful, Smokey Robinson-sampling production. The song is tied together by raspy, emotive vocals courtesy of Washington, D.C. vocalist Andy Gruhin. Ezko is a man on a mission, which quickly becomes apparent with his lead off verse. He’s got a chip on his shoulder, and is determined to move forward. Scolla is equally determined on the second verse as he resolves to achieve greatness by any means. Thurz echoes these sentiments with the third verse, as he pledges to turn dreams to reality.
“Wake Up” samples Smokey Robinson’s “Being With You,” a romantic, slow-moving record dedicated to the woman he can’t live without. In modern terms, “Wake Up” is a record declaring the same level of devotion. The only difference is that these artists pledge loyalty to success before a significant other. Battling long odds is an integral part of many independent artists’ daily lives, and “Wake Up” chronicles this daily effort. These four prove to be a very fitting combination, despite coming from different corners of the country. Hopefully we hear them together in the future. There’s no word as to when Ezko’s next project will release, but we’ll be looking out. We’re happy to be premiering “Wake Up” today. Stream below.
